The Latest Weapon Against Mosquitoes: Computer Vision

Mosquitoes are the chief culprit in spreading malaria, which kills more than 600,000 people every year and is one of the priorities of the Gates Foundations health work. Although scientists have learned a lot about mosquitoes over the past few decades, one problem is particularly tricky: how to distinguish different mosquito species. Some new uses of computer vision are accelerating the mosquito identification process. They not only help us understand our opponents, but also help us target their weaknesses, save more lives, and bring us closer to the goal of eradicating malaria. One of the most exciting innovations is an application called "VectorCam", which allows people with simple training to identify mosquito species in a few seconds. VectorCam was developed by Dr. Soumya Acharya and his team of bioengineers at Johns Hopkins University, with support from the Uganda Malaria Control Program, Makerere University, and the Gates Foundation. Using a smartphone, the VectorCam app, and an inexpensive lens attached to the phone, you only need to take a photo of the mosquito to immediately identify its species. The application can distinguish different mosquito species that transmit malaria, determine the sex of the mosquito, and if it is a female mosquito, tell whether it has recently sucked blood or has developed eggs. VectorCam not only identifies mosquitoes, but also simplifies the data collection process. In many places, mosquito surveillance still requires manually filling out paper forms, which then need to be transported and manually entered into computer systems. With VectorCam, data can be digitized and aggregated to provide health officials with up-to-date information. In the fight against mosquitoes, we can finally see our opponents clearly. I am optimistic that these innovations will bring us closer to a malaria-free world than ever before.
