Chinese Aid Experts in Zanzibar Promote Standardization of Schistosomiasis Detection Technology

Recently, the second batch of Chinese aid experts for schistosomiasis prevention and control in Zanzibar, in cooperation with the disease prevention and control institutions of Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania, held a "Training Course on Promotion of Chinese Schistosomiasis Prevention and Control Technical Standards and Enhancement of Laboratory Detection Capabilities." More than 80 medical staff and laboratory technicians from disease control institutions and hospitals at all levels in Pemba participated in this training. During the training, the Chinese expert team explained in detail key knowledge about the biological characteristics, epidemiological features, diagnosis, and treatment of Schistosoma haematobium, with a focus on introducing etiological detection techniques such as urine microscopy and nucleic acid detection technology for Schistosoma haematobium. In the practical session, the expert team divided the trainees into several groups, and each group was equipped with a professional instructor. Detailed demonstrations and explanations were conducted according to standards for urine sample collection, preparation, testing, and result interpretation. Masoud, Director of the Medical Administration Department of the Pemba Health Bureau, highly praised this training. He stated that grassroots medical and health personnel on Pemba Island lack schistosomiasis detection capabilities, and the learning and practice from this training course have greatly improved the standardized detection capabilities for Schistosoma haematobium in local disease control and medical institutions, providing a guarantee for timely detection and treatment.
