On December 18, 2024, the World Health Organization prequalified the first diagnostic test for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, which helps in the safe administration of WHO-recommended treatments to prevent relapse of Plasmodium vivax infection. The prequalification of this diagnostic test marks an important milestone in promoting safe and effective treatment for vivax malaria, once again demonstrating WHOs commitment to ensuring equitable access to life-saving health solutions worldwide. Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, WHO Assistant Director-General for Access to Medicines and Health Products, said: "The prequalification of a G6PD enzyme test for people with vivax malaria can help countries strengthen access to much-needed quality-assured tests, thereby enabling safe and effective treatment and prevention of this type of relapsing malaria."
